#WeeklyRoundUp — 6 Things to Do Before Blogalicious Weekend

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know Blogalicious Weekend is the event to attend this year. We’ve emailed and shared updates about our wonderful sponsors, speakers and workshops. You know who’ll be there, what they’re bringing and that the opportunity for you to network is there. By now, you also know that we’re returning to Atlanta and will make the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Buckhead our home for that weekend.

In today’s Round Up, we’re not rehashing what you already know. Instead, we’re providing you with a checklist to ensure that you get the fullness of the Blogalicious experience. We want you to learn and have fun. If you do these things now, you’ll spend more time doing just that come November 3-5!

6 Things to Do Before Blogalicious Weekend

4-8-16 - Blogalicious Weekly Round Up

Have you booked your hotel room?

Today is the last day to book your hotel room in the Grand Hyatt Hotel at $169/night. Every year, we secure a hotel block for our attendees to stay in the conference hotel at a cheaper rate. The deadline to take advantage of that deal is tonight. Please book your room immediately if you intend on staying at the conference hotel!

Have you found a roommate?

We have a long Roommate thread in our exclusive Facebook group for attendees in need of roommates. (You can’t miss the photo!) Take a look at the comments and see who still needs a roommate or two. This will be a fun way to get to know new people, reconnect with your old friends and save money on your room.

Have you joined the Social Suite?

As mentioned above, we have an exclusive group for past and present conference attendees called the Blogalicious Social Suite. We share tips, resources, ideas and new ways of doing the same old thing. We’re big on engaging and cultivating community, so if you’re on Facebook (we know you are) and you’re coming to #Blogalicious8, join our group here. You won’t be disappointed.

Have you signed up for our newsletter?

If you’re on our email list, your inbox is constantly on #fleek! That’s because we want to keep you informed on what’s happening with us, in the community and for the conference. Besides, our theme is Content Is Life, so it’s only right that we send you all the content! Just recently, we told you that our premium sponsors are Dove, Coca Cola and Kia. Now’s a great time to plan your introductions in case you’d like to chat with their representatives. Join the Blogalicious newsletter today.

Have you registered for #Blogalicious8?

None of the above would be possible if you haven’t registered for the conference! Without having registered, you won’t get a nice name tag, have a reserved #SeatAtTheTable, or have the opportunity to connect with coaches and mentors like Stacey Ferguson, Ramon Ray, Arsha Jones and Danica Kombol! Blogalicious 8 is somewhere you want to be and the best part is that we really want you there! Register now while we still have tickets left.

Have you built your schedule?

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could select which workshops and sessions you want to attend now? With Sched, that’s possible! Take 5 minutes to look at our extensive agenda and plug in where you want to be each day of Blogalicious Weekend. While you have the option to print out your schedule, Sched makes it easy with it’s digital capabilities. You can also download the app, with the conference logo, to your phone’s home screen for easy access. (Our Tech Advisor, Terrance Gaines, shared a quick tutorial on how iPhone users can do this in the Social Suite yesterday!) Build your schedule here.

We’ve said it many times, but it’s true: We can’t wait to see you there! Let us know if you have any questions.

#WeeklyRoundUp — The Word On Instagram Stories Vs. SnapChat Stories

Mark Zuckerberg is the entrepreneur we all aspire to be! Smart, innovative, and unafraid to go for the gusto when necessary. That gusto is called Instagram Stories, also known as the new SnapChat. Last week Instagram released an eerily similar feature that allows users to record live videos for their audience. Users freaked out over the change and boldly called out Instagram for jacking SnapChat’s entire life.

Now a week later, the conversation seems to be more in favor of Instagram Stories, as they’re convenient for existing users and hold likable features. SnapChat is still Bae for millions of users, but the difference in the two platforms seems to be the age groups they appeal to. To help you choose a side — #TeamSnapChat or #TeamInstagramStories — we found comparative blog posts from some of your favorite blogs and influencers. Happy choosing!

AddThis Asks: Instagram or SnapChat?

“If you started asking yourself this question last week, you’re definitely not alone. It’s important to remember that it’s more of a “Instagram Stories vs Snapchat Stories” question, not so much an Instagram vs Snapchat one. Each platform still offers it’s own unique capabilities and most marketers or brands reading this have already invested time building audiences on both of them. Definitely don’t abandon yourSnapchat followers!

“What Instagram Stories does provide is way to communicate more intimately with your Instagram followers in a way the app didn’t previously allow for, but is what helped Snapchat take off as a marketing tool. It’s about providing that unpolished, behind-the-scenes look that followers love to see from their favorite celebrities, brands, etc.”

Black Hound Creative’s Concerns About Instagram Stories

“As far as the future of Snapchat is concerned, I’m unsure whether it will continue to grow and maintain its popularity. Our generation is all about convenience and seamless integration – and tying everything together as Instagram has done makes an easy case for those who feel the need to choose between Instagram Stories and Snapchat. Having a Snapchat account is cool until it’s cloned and combined into a social media platform you also have an account for – aka who wants numerous social media accounts when one does it all? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Gorgeous In Grey on the Pros of Instagram Stories

“I posted 6 Instasnaps. My views on Instagram in one hour were equal to what would normally take a 24 hour period on Snapchat. There are nearly 500 million users on Instagram compared to the 100 million on Snapchat. This feature will create an even deeper gap between the two platforms. Depending on your audience most will more than likely already be on Instagram and Facebook. If you have a huge following on Instagram, it makes way more sense to be on InstaSnap than to encourage those users to download another app. And Snapchat is still struggling to gain the downloads of people who are over 21.”

So we want to know. Are you into Instagram Stories or SnapChat Stories?

July: BlogHer16 Welcomes Kim Kardashian West as Keynote Speaker

Our friends at BlogHer are bringing Kim Kardashian West to their summer conference to talk about “Growing Her Media and Commerce Empire, the Responsibility of Social Influence, and What’s Next”. Kim has single-handedly mastered the art of branding, marketing and what it means to be a serial #girlboss.

“Kim made TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2015, and for good reason: From the foundation of the long-running reality TV show she executive produces, ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’, she has built a massive business that includes one of the most popular apps to date, several apparel ventures, and legions of loyal social media fans,” said Elisa Camahort Page, SheKnows Media’s Chief Community Officer. “Kim, at her core, is an undeniably savvy businesswoman.”

Camahort Page continued, “In addition to her business prowess, Kim is at the center of many cultural conversations, particularly around body confidence and the intersection of feminism and sexuality. We respect Kim’s unapologetic stance when participating in these conversations, and we are thrilled to welcome Kim to #BlogHer16: Experts Among Us to give attendees the opportunity to hear her perspective on her own influence and accomplishments.”

Additionally, speaking giants such as Aisha Tyler, Sheryl Crow, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Mayim Bialik will accompany the BlogHer stage in just a few weeks. Read the full Press Release here. BlogHer16: Experts Amoung Us will take place in Los Angeles, California from August 4-6. Get your tickets here.

July: ColorComm Conference

Last and certainly not least, we want to congratulate Stacey Ferguson on her speaking engagement at ColorComm Conference, which is happening now in Miami, Florida. Stacey spoke on Social Media Bytes session with Weber Shandwick today and we know it was a success. The conference ends on July 22, so move fast if you’re interested in buying last minute tickets. You’ll find Arianna Huffington of The Huffington Post; Michelle Eubanks of Essence Communications; Phillip Thomas of Cannes Lions Festival; and Mónica Talán of Univision Communications.

If you’re at ColorComm, tweet us @beblogalicious about your experience thus far!

Enjoy the rest of July!

#WeeklyRoundUp — Read Like An Entrepreneur

Being an entrepreneur isn’t always fun and games. Sure, there are perks, like taking impromptu nap breaks, leaving early to run family errands and creating resourceful products that’ll increase your earning potential. But the crux of entrepreneurship is often that we don’t understand it’s complex world too much in the beginning of our journeys. If you find yourself wading in these waters often, now would be a great time to invest in entrepreneurial reading material both on-and-offline. Find interviews and editorials from bosses in the game that you look up to and apply their wisdom to your situation. We believe in a good boss read, whether it’s a magazine, ezine, podcast or book, and want to share a few of them with you today in our Weekly Round Up.

read like an entrepreneur blogalicious

7 Tools to Help You Read Like An Entrepreneur

1. Fast Company

2. YFS Magazine (Young, Fabulous & Self-Employed)

3. Entrepreneur

4. Forbes

5. Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso

6. My Taught You by Myleik Teele

7. OWN by Oprah Winfrey (and pretty much anything Oprah publishes! Her gems are pivotal for both business and self-care.)

If you aren’t reading entrepreneurial literature at least once a week, consider using one of these tools to introduce you to that. You are bound to learn better ways to think, operate your business, handle stress and mounting responsibilities, how to select a dedicated team, freelancers for-hire, new trends and tools, and the best places to vacation. We also encourage you to find a mentor (or two) as they will guide you to more reading and learning materials and how to truly make entrepreneurship work for you. Consider your local SCORE office or social media groups as resources during your mentor search.

What are your favorite boss publications to read? What’s the best thing you’ve learned from them so far? If you don’t have one, which publication do you plan to start reading this week? Share with us in the comments or on social media.

Nely Galan’s Self Made Book is in Stores!

unnamed (1)

“Being self-made means you’re in the driver’s seat of your life. It means you control your financial destiny. It means you work because you want to, and not because you have to. It means you see the world through the lens of your goals, instead of being deluded by the temporary lure of instant gratifications. It means you embrace sacrifice, you choose yourself, and you become your own Prince Charming. But above all, being self-made means you are self-reliant, empowered and rich in every way, because instead of following your bliss–you create it.”

Nely Galan’s Self Made, now in stores, provides a safe and motivational space for women unashamed of being the boss of their own life. Whether that ownership comes in the boardroom, in love and relationships, motherhood or elsewhere, this book empowers women to feel at their best while living the lives their desire and deserve. Women are constantly told to choose, but leaders like Galan remind us that with a strong and positive mindset and standards, we don’t have to. In fact, we can choose to have our versions of “all”.

In addition to this fantastic read, Self Made  promotes a new website, app and powerful movement of women like you sharing their stores. Learn more about the book here.

#WeeklyRoundUp — Twitter Chat, News & So Much More
5-18-16 - Blogalicious Weekly Round Up

This week is all about Twitter. See what’s happening at their headquarters, what it means for you as a user, and how you can join our next chat.

Twitter Will Remove 140-Character Limit

Twitter has an average of 310 million monthly users. The social media platform is popular because it allows users to share quick messages and thoughts on the fly from devices of their choice. The downfall that many users have felt over the years is it’s 140 character limit, which is hardly enough to share a complete, sincere thought. The Twitter gods put their ears to the pavement and are now “giving users more freedom to compose longer messages.”

The social media company will soon stop counting photos and links as part of its 140-character limit for messages, according to a person familiar with the matter. The change could happen in the next two weeks, said the person who asked not to be named because the decision isn’t yet public. Links currently take up 23 characters, even after Twitter automatically shortens them. The company declined to comment.

There isn’t much more information about the change other than it’s coming soon. Read the concise report on Bloomberg.

Debra Lee, New to Twitter’s Board of Directors

In 2015, Laura Dunn asked BET chairwoman and CEO Debra Lee what advice she’d offer women who are seeking a leadership role. Her response was short, but impactful:

“Women seeking leadership roles should take some risks. People often say women are promoted on accomplishments and men are promoted on potential. We need to start fighting to be promoted on potential. Tell yourself, I haven’t done this job yet, but I’m smart and I can learn it. Be self-confident about that.”

Since then, Ms. Lee has been named as Twitter’s newest member on their board of directors. To put it plainly, Black Girl Magic will be sprinkled throughout Silicon Valley as she is the first black woman on the board! We couldn’t be more excited for Ms. Lee and Twitter as they ride off into the sunset together.

Lee has been one of The Hollywood Reporter’s 100 Most Powerful Women in Entertainment, and the first African-American female executive to get a Vanguard Award from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association. On Monday, she tweeted what we all felt:

We’ll be closely following this relationship!
