The gallons of rain from June washed out our expired editorial calendar and ushered in one that is fresh and relevant. One of the changes we made how we distribute our Round Ups. Going from weekly to now monthly recaps, you can expect a rundown of what’s new in technology, social media trends, pop culture + hot topics, and happenings within our community.
We hope you’ll enjoy our ‘something new’. Here’s our monthly roundup for June 2017.
Jay-Z pulled a Beyonce and silently dropped his 13th studio album 4:44 last night. Fans have been raving since 11 PM and have already dubbed it as Jay’s response to Beyonce’s Lemonade. The power couple recently welcomed twins and are settled in their temporary home in Malibu, California. 4:44 is a clairvoyant recompense of the rapper’s infidelities and pain that he’s caused women in his life, especially his wife and mother to his three children. We haven’t listened yet but according to the overwhelmingly positive reviews, 4:44 will grace our weekend playlists.
Do you suffer from Impostor Syndrome? In a recent team chat about “living up to potential”, our Resident in Tech, Terrance Gaines shared an article about what it is and 21 ways to overcome it. Here are a few that stood out:
– Focus on providing value. From Start Up Bros, “The fastest way to get over feeling like a fraud is to genuinely try to help someone else.”
– Stop comparing yourself to that person. Read this, “There’s no good reason for you to be reading what I’m writing. There are world class biographies of Warren Buffett, John D. Rockefeller, and Einstein. James Altucher has had more successes than me. Peter Thiel just wrote a book. Tim Ferriss, Paul Graham, Kevin Kelly… these guys blog! But still, I’m writing this because I think I have something to offer. Actually, when I look at my praise file I have proof that I have something to offer.”
– Nobody belongs here more than you. This sentence resonated: “If you can admit that nobody belongs here more than you (while maintaining the belief that you don’t belong here any more than anyone else) you will find yourself making connections with people in powerful ways.”

Have you been watching Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta? Some of our favorite bloggers and influencers have and they’ve got a lot to say about it. We did a roundup of their early recaps on the show here. Read a few of them before jumping into this week’s episode, which was probably the fieriest of them all. If you’ve been following the show, who’s your favorite cast member?
The Serena Williams, arguably the GOAT, showed off her pregnant belly (ahem, naked body) on this month’s cover of Vanity Fair. The 35-year-old icon was photographed by Annie Leibovitz to adorn what Vanity Fair calls a retelling of her and fiancé Alex Ohanian’s love story. From her hair to her beautiful brown skin to the glow that only pregnancy can bring on, Serena looks absolutely perfect and happy. Congrats, star!
The 2017 BET Awards have come and gone but we had a little bit to say. In case you missed it, here are 9 entrepreneurial lessons we learned from watching the hip hop ceremony on Sunday. Let us know your favorite parts.
We’ve been gone for a minute but now we’re back in the jump off! On Saturday, July 15, the summer Blogalicious Pop Experience will kick off in Atlanta. The location is under lock and key at the moment, but we can share that the event will take place from 1 PM to 4 PM. We’re sharing details in our exclusive Facebook group and via newsletter, so be on the lookout for more details.
A few members of our awesome community were featured in Hacker Noon’s 200 Black Women in Tech to Follow On Twitter. The list is packed with “Software Engineers, Web Developers, Coders, Tech Journalists and Bloggers, and more.” Please take a moment to read, follow, and congratulate your peers! We see you being great, guys.
Just when we thought she couldn’t get any more awesome, communications expert Amber Wright penned her debut book Can We Talk?: 10 Life Lessons on Finding Your Voice & Finding Yourselfclick here. The new author is hosting a book launch and signing on July 8 in Los Angeles, CA. We’re so proud of Amber and have enjoyed watching her journey unfold. Instagram now features a Paid Partner Tag? Yes, they do. But what is it? Refinery 29 shared details on Instagram’s newest update this week.
Here’s how the new feature works: If an an influencer is posting sponsored content, they should select “Advanced Settings” along the bottom of the caption screen. These advanced settings, where you can turn off comments for a post, will have a new “Branded Content” section that says “Tag Business Partner.” When an influencer chooses that option, the partner’s name will be added where a location tag normally shows up. The same goes for a sponsored post in an Instagram Story.
Ariel Williams is the digital content manager and part-time social media support at Blogalicious.com. She also runs SlayCulture.com. Send your pitches and questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our 2017 Conference Theme is…
Everywhere we turn, we’re seeing the spirit of Tribes make its presence known. Whether in the form of an Instagram pod or a Facebook community; a podcast audience or a Slack group, the desire to form a circle of like-minded individuals with a common goal and respected leadership is everywhere. And here’s the secret that us influencers have known all along: the level of engagement within a well-led tribe is through the roof. This is exciting, not only for content creators, but for media and marketers, too.
As so keenly put by Seth Godin almost a decade ago:
“A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea. For millions of years, human beings have been part of one tribe or another. A group needs only two things to be a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate.”
(Seth Godin, Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us)
We want to take that notion one step further and highlight your ‘how.’ What are some of the smartest, most fun, and most powerful ways you’ve gone about building your tribe?
For our 9th annual Blogalicious Weekend, we’re celebrating the importance of tribes — the trusted communities that each of you has built and are so expertly leading. In doing so, we’re paying homage to our tribe of multicultural, social media enthusiasts who continually build and foster platforms; destinations, resources, collaborations and connections that bring to light movements, information, life-hacks and social issues to the world around them. From where we stand, “Tribe” is not just another “it” word, but a way of life and sense of kinship that elevates everyone and everything around us. With an inspired tribe, the ability to make change and leave a legacy is beyond limits
It’s time to #TribeUp!
Event date is October 5-8th, 2017. When applying, please be available to speak that weekend.
We read/view every single submission. You will receive an email notice notifying that your application has been received.
Application deadline is Friday, June 2nd! We’re on a very tight deadline so for this reason, absolutely NO exceptions.
Decision day is Sunday, June 25, 2017. You will receive an email notification from Blogalicious letting you know if your submission has been accepted or declined with next steps. Please do not email Blogalicious before that date.
Your submission should be focused on serving the needs of the attendees with our theme in mind. Clearly state on what significant offering and takeaways you will be providing our community.
This year we are curating a more streamlined event program. We’re looking for intermediate to advanced level facilitators to guide our community. Our agenda this year includes masterclasses, siestas and tribe gatherings. With that said, as much as we would love to, we cannot accept every single submission.
Selected Speakers will receive complimentary Influencers registration for Blogalicious Weekend. You will be responsible for covering your own lodging and transportation.
2013 was a big year for Blogalicious – it was our 5th birthday! That year we returned to Atlanta and celebrated our milestone with a bang. Life stylist and motivational speaker, Harriette Cole moved participants to tears (literally) in her VIP workshop on Mastering Your Elevator Pitch; while Luvvie Ajayi and Kailei Carr served as the perfect hostesses of the Scandal Premiere Watch Party presented by XFINITY CelebrateBlackTV.com – the Olivia Pope outfits were fiyah!!
And rounding out our ‘Create.Build.Fund’ theme was none other than Elisa Camahort Page, co-founder of BlogHer, who gave one of our most impactiful keynotes on Funding Your Dream: What to know, who to know, and perhaps most importantly: What NOT to do. Our 5th birthday was pretty awesome, don’t you think?
CNN Hero Derreck Kayongo’s energy was infectious! He shared his story about how his Global Soap Project came to be and then ended the keynote by getting us all to participate in a song. We’re inspired by the work he continues to do through his current role as CEO of the National Center for Human and Civil Rights.
OWN Greenleaf actor, Lamman Rucker visited Blogalicious 2014 and spent quality time with the men at a private luncheon hosted by Toyota. Following the lunch, the meet and greet line to take a photo with Lamman extended well past the ballroom doors. Ladies and babies alike loved having him there! He was gracious, funny and had a heart of gold.
We had the pleasure and good time of listening to Issa Rae give a keynote Q&A moderated by another media maven, Luvvie Ajayi. Issa gave us insight into the not-so-glamorous work that has gone into her ascent from YouTuber to premium cable TV series producer and actress. We took all the notes.
In 2015 we hosted Blogalicious Weekend in Baltimore. It was a somber time because the city was on high alert due to the high profile Freddie Gray case. Baltimore city Mayor, the Honorable Stephanie Rawlings-Blake talked about her rise into politics and how naysayers tried to stop her path to greatness. “You can’t imagine how a fly haircut and lip gloss can affect some people.” Word.
Blogalicious co-founder, Stacey Ferguson moderated a panel featuring YBF Founder: Natasha Eubanks, We All Grow Latina Founder: Ana Flores, serialprenuer: Paul Carrick Brunson and Curlz Founder: Mahisha Dellinger. They dropped gems about how they’ve built their empires and gave the attendees the encouragement to stay the course.
Nely opened Blogalicious weekend by sharing how one defining moment in her career inspired her to make a shift and start her multi-million business empire. She also emphasized that each woman should be her own Prince Charming. Women should set out to create their own rich life in every way. Another thing she said: “buy buildings, not shoes!”
Ramon Ray, Publisher and Exeutive Editor of Smart Hustle Magazine closed Blogalicious Weekend sharing his secret sauce for getting the media talking about YOU and your product or service. The sauce was so tasty, that 45 minutes was simply not enough time for Ramon and Justice Fergie told him to keep talking for another fifteen minutes! The attendees loved his informative talk and his energy was infectious.
As you can see, we’ve been SO fortunate to have so many amazing speakers grace our stage. Each year, our keynotes bring a different set of perspectives, motivation and energy to our event that we hope stick with your for months afterwards. We’re all about lifting one another up and learning from these captains of industry is so critical to our mission. Oh, and the occasional appearance from a comedian-R&B singer-spokesmodel-rap legend-TV Chef doesn’t hurt either!
