July’s Blab with Danielle Slaughter

Danielle Slaughter is joining us on tomorrow’s Blab to discuss how to use your authentic voice to share social issues without alienating your blog audience. Please join us next Thursday, July 28 at 2:30pm EST for this very important discussion!

In the words of our Blab facilitator and bLink manager, Pamela King, “With all that is happening in our communities from politics, #BlackLivesMatter, #BlueLivesMatter,#AllLivesMatter and everything in between most don’t know or understand how to stay authentic to your blog voice while bringing awareness to social issues. If you miss anything next week, don’t let this be the event you miss.” We couldn’t agree more.

Our friends at BlogHer are bringing Kim Kardashian West to their summer conference to talk about “Growing Her Media and Commerce Empire, the Responsibility of Social Influence, and What’s Next”. Kim has single-handedly mastered the art of branding, marketing and what it means to be a serial #girlboss.

“Kim made TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2015, and for good reason: From the foundation of the long-running reality TV show she executive produces, ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’, she has built a massive business that includes one of the most popular apps to date, several apparel ventures, and legions of loyal social media fans,” said Elisa Camahort Page, SheKnows Media’s Chief Community Officer. “Kim, at her core, is an undeniably savvy businesswoman.”

Camahort Page continued, “In addition to her business prowess, Kim is at the center of many cultural conversations, particularly around body confidence and the intersection of feminism and sexuality. We respect Kim’s unapologetic stance when participating in these conversations, and we are thrilled to welcome Kim to #BlogHer16: Experts Among Us to give attendees the opportunity to hear her perspective on her own influence and accomplishments.”

Additionally, speaking giants such as Aisha Tyler, Sheryl Crow, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Mayim Bialik will accompany the BlogHer stage in just a few weeks. Read the full Press Release here. BlogHer16: Experts Amoung Us will take place in Los Angeles, California from August 4-6. Get your tickets here.

Blog Tip: Clean Up Your Blog

A fresh and updated blog makes it easier for potential customers and readers to navigate your webspace. Want comments on your blog posts? Set up a simple commenting system. Want readers to share your content? Enable the proper plugins for them to use. Let’s go through a few more checks and balances that will help you clean up your blog in 30 minutes or less.

Clean Up Your Blog

10 Questions to Help Clean Up Your Blog in 30 Minutes

1. Are your plugins up to date?

2. Is your version of WordPress up to date?

3. Have you responded to those comments sitting in your Comments box?

4. Can people share your content easily? Plugins to try: Simple Share, AddToAny, WP Sharing, Social Share Buttons.

5. Is your new content automatically shared to your social media pages?

6. Are your social media fields properly filled out? When someone hovers over the social icons on your blog, make sure that you’re redirecting them to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, not or Instead, change those fields to URL of your social page, like this:

7. Do you need all of your plugins? Too many plugins can slow down your site. Only use what you need and consider removing those of no value.

8. Do you have enough plugins? On the contrary, you may not be using the right plugins for your audience or needs. Identify the important things you want to know about your audience and seek plugins that benefit those needs. A few to consider are Google Analytics, Share This, Yoast SEO and Click to Tweet.

9. Are your permalinks properly set up?

10. Can you commit to a blog clean up once a quarter?

Most of these issues can simply be fixed by familiarizing yourself with the Settings in your dashboard or each plugin. Our best advice for maintaining a clean blog is to properly fill out designated text fields, or questions, you’re being asked. Keeping up to date on these things will not only save you time in the long run, but will provide your audience with a quicker and pleasant visiting experience.

What will you do to clean up your blog today?

On Freedom, Injustice & Power of Speaking Out

We prepared ourselves for a three-day weekend last week with glee and excitement. Cookouts, fireworks, family time, lazy beach days, no emails and sound sleep congregated on the minds of many. This, and being able to celebrate that we’re healthy and free on Independence Day, is what moved us along. Tuesday morning, we returned refreshed and ready to pick up where we left off at work. Except this didn’t happen for Alton Sterling, 37-year-old Baton Rouge man who was killed by police in front of Triple S Food Mart.

Sterling was a family man like many of our loved ones. Known around town as the “CD Man”, Sterling sold CDs to provide for his wife and three children. On July 5, police officers responded to an anonymous tip about Sterling waving a gun in the process of selling those CDs. It seems that without much conversation or explanation from the now slain Sterling, the two police officers reacted to his size, skin color and gun possession as a means to shoot him four or five times in the back. Within minutes, Sterling was dead and his family now dismantled.

The next day, July 6, a 32-year-old Minnesota man by the name of Philando Castile was shot to death for gun possession, too. Castile was the passenger in his girlfriend’s car when police pulled them over for a busted taillight. Like many of us are taught to do in these times, Castile complied with the officers and told them that he had a gun. He, too, was shot four times within minutes by police as his four-year-old daughter watched in the backseat.

Sterling and Castile were armed citizens with gun permits in open carry states. The fact that they were senselessly and violently killed in a country that just celebrated freedom and liberty three days ago is a problem.

Our mission at Blogalicious is “to grow a supportive and vibrant community of influencers that celebrates digital diversity.” Our 3-fold objective is:

  • to be THE go-to destination and resource for influential multicultural women social media enthusiasts from all over the world to collaborate, connect and uplift one another;
  • to showcase the value of the demographic in today’s marketplace to marketers; and
  • to serve as a think tank and mouthpiece for causes, policies and issues affecting the multicultural digital space.

We’ve achieved those things and would be totally remiss not to speak up about the racial injustice and violence happening all over our country. Sterling and Castile reminds us of the work we all must do to prevent these kind of tragedies and to truly obtain freedom for minorities in America. If one or two of us are not free, none of us are.

Our hearts are broken for these men, their families and Black people in America. The unfortunate murders of two innocent men (and those before them) cannot be undone, but we can act towards change. Now, we’re asking for your help, too.

Today, we encourage you to mobilize and connect and uplift each other. Use your platform to bravely share your thoughts, frustrations, and condolences to those who cannot speak for themselves. Don’t be afraid to talk about racial injustice and police brutality! Get involved in your local communities — ask questions, provide insight, listen to and empathize with others. Stand up for who and what you believe in fearlessly and unapologetically. Educate your families on what’s happening and write down ways you can collectively help. Lastly and most importantly, be smart and kind in all you are doing!

Let us leave you with these words from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr:

Speak Out injustice

Will you join us and speak out against police brutality and racial injustice today?

#WeeklyRoundUp — Read Like An Entrepreneur

Being an entrepreneur isn’t always fun and games. Sure, there are perks, like taking impromptu nap breaks, leaving early to run family errands and creating resourceful products that’ll increase your earning potential. But the crux of entrepreneurship is often that we don’t understand it’s complex world too much in the beginning of our journeys. If you find yourself wading in these waters often, now would be a great time to invest in entrepreneurial reading material both on-and-offline. Find interviews and editorials from bosses in the game that you look up to and apply their wisdom to your situation. We believe in a good boss read, whether it’s a magazine, ezine, podcast or book, and want to share a few of them with you today in our Weekly Round Up.

5. Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso

6. My Taught You by Myleik Teele

7. OWN by Oprah Winfrey (and pretty much anything Oprah publishes! Her gems are pivotal for both business and self-care.)

If you aren’t reading entrepreneurial literature at least once a week, consider using one of these tools to introduce you to that. You are bound to learn better ways to think, operate your business, handle stress and mounting responsibilities, how to select a dedicated team, freelancers for-hire, new trends and tools, and the best places to vacation. We also encourage you to find a mentor (or two) as they will guide you to more reading and learning materials and how to truly make entrepreneurship work for you. Consider your local SCORE office or social media groups as resources during your mentor search.

What are your favorite boss publications to read? What’s the best thing you’ve learned from them so far? If you don’t have one, which publication do you plan to start reading this week? Share with us in the comments or on social media.
